Reflection For School Counseling - 778 Words

Although this course was a short, general overview of what school counseling has to offer, it has opened my eyes to aspects of the profession that I think I will excel in and other things that I think I may struggle with. First, I believe that one strength of mine is that I am very organized. I take pride in my organization skills and it helps me get things done in a timely and efficient manner. I feel that organization is an important skill to have as a school counselor because of all of the paperwork and documentation that needs to be done. Being organized will help me be able to easily find things in my office when needed, such as when a parent or any other stakeholder comes to me with a question regarding my work or a student. With†¦show more content†¦These are all characteristics that play a major role in leadership, which is an important trait for a school counselor to have. While there are characteristics of mine that I feel are strengths that will help me succeed as a school counselor, there are also some things that I am not so confident in that I need to work on. One weakness that I feel that I have regarding school counseling is my shyness and the idea of public speaking. Speaking in front of crowds has always been a struggle of mine, whether it is in a professional setting or relaxed setting. Although I knew that school counselors go into classrooms and teach students about particular topics, I never really considered how often it occurs. Throughout this program, I hope to increase my confidence and ability to speak in front of crowds and get more comfortable with it over time. In addition, another weakness of mine that I acknowledge is that I sometimes take things too personally. This is one characteristic of mine that I plan to work on throughout the program as well, so that I do not let things get the best of me when I am working. For example, if a parent gets upset with me for not being able to disclose certain information to them, I might take it personally and get upset with myself because I could not please everyone.
